Summer Time!

Happy First (Official) Day of Summer!

It's been a little over a week since I wrapped up the school year at Bridges Academy. I must say, it was a tough year but I'm so glad I finished strong! I can't believe how much I learned! I feel so much more confident in myself as a teacher. I also had a couple really great moments with students towards the end that really made it all worth it.

I gave one of my students a sketch book as a good-bye present. He is an avid artist and drawing has been his solace in the midst of some very tough times. I wrote him a little note in the front. I read him the note and he said he especially liked the part where I wrote that I hoped every time he saw the book, he would remember that there are people who love him, care for him and believe in him. Sweet boy, he was so moved he just sat there staring at it for a long time.

Another of my students was upset when I told her I might not be back the next year. I told her I would make sure to get her my phone number before the end of the year. I left a voicemail with her grandfather, wishing them a good summer, and telling her that she could call me any time. I didn't really expect to ever hear from her, but a few days later she called just to chat and tell me about what she was doing. I was so honored that she actually took the time to call. I feel like I really made an impact in her life.

For now I am just tutoring a few hours here and there at Sylvan. Sometimes it's hard to get myself to work, but once I'm there, I always have a lot of fun! I like the fast pace and the kids are all great. I enjoy working with a wide age-range and knowing that I am meeting students where they are at. My youngest sister will be here in a few days and I'm going to help do some independent study over the summer. My mom dropped off the books and the lesson plans and the wheels in my teacher brain are already spinning!

Stay cool, everyone!
